Journey Through The Steppeland 

Itinerary Summary:

This tour takes a lap to the west of UB into the central provinces of Mongolia. Check out the pictures and imagine wide steppe, rolling hills, snow capped mountains in the distance and lots of animals.

TOUR ITINERARY DETAILS:
 

Day 1: Arrival in UB

We will meet at either the train station or the airport and first head for your hotel. Once you’re settled in, we’ll give you a basic orientation in UB and talk through the plans for the trip. Depending on the time of day and your energy level, we can go for a walking tour of downtown UB or head for one of the local coffee shops.

We like to go out for dinner together on your first night in UB, unless you are too tired of course. In any case, we’ll be leaving early tomorrow so everybody will be turning in rather soon.

 

Day 2: The Sand Strings

After breakfast, we will head to the Sand Strings, a rare sight of sand hills with rivers and lake. The length of the sand string continuous over 150 km and is sodden under its surface, so shrubberies such as willow, elm and dogwood, grow in the area.

Stay over at gher camp. 

 

Day 3: Karakorum City

Today, we will explore Karakorum city ruin, it was the ancient capital of Great Mongolian Empire built during Ugudei Khan's rein in 1220s. In the center of town youwill find Erdene Zuu monastery. The four stone turtles that originally marked the boundaries of ancient Karakorum still exist nowadays. 

 

Day 4: Orkhon Valley

The Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO world heritage site, is a beautiful extended valley in central Mongolia. The Orkhon river, the longest river in Mongolia, allows for beautiful hikes along the riverbanks from or to the largest waterfall along its path, the 20m high Ulaan Tsutgalan.

Day 5: Tuvkhun Mountain

We will visit “Tuvkhun” monastery which is located in a fascinating mountainous area of forest Steppe in Khangain Nuruu National Park. Take your small travel bag with you and we will start hiking to Shiveet Hill upslope, towards the top of the mountain for about an hour. There we will find recently restored Buddhist monastery of Tuvkhun surrounded by an beautiful nature. There are some intriguing small meditation caves such as mother's womb.

Day 6: Tsenkher Hot Spring

In the morning we will drive to the Tsetserleg town, capital of Arkhangai province and visit Zay Gegeen Temple- Museum dated back to 1750s. Then continue our journey to Taikhar rock inscription where you find many kinds of scripts dated III-XVIII centuries such as Turkic, old Mongolian, Chinese character, Tibetan and modern Mongolian cyrillics. After lunch off to “Tsekher”, a natural hot spring flows out year-round from ground at 85 Celsius degree and it has a high mineral content which composed of calcium, sodium and sulphuric etc. Hot spring shower and hot spring bath will be waiting for you to relax and chill.

Day 7: Terkh Lake

Upon reaching Terkh national park area, we will hike up to "Khorgo" extinct volcano, surrounded by crates and trees. There is a small pond in center of the volcano, when hiking into the mountains you will see ground cave with year-round ice, the stone shelters formed by explosions of lava. After lunch, walk by the beach of the lake and wander around the area while horseback riding .

Overnight, stay at gher camp.

Day 8: Tsetserleg

Tsetserleg, literally translated "flower garden", is the capital city of Arhangai province. After a week of countryside travel, the city will feel slightly crowded to us despite its less than 20'000 inhabitants. We take the opportunity to restock our supplies at the local market and to watch life in one of Mongolia's countryside cities. Towards the afternoon, we head onwards toward our camp for the night.

Day 9: Ugii Lake 

​Often described as "a large lake in the middle of nowhere, Ugii Lake is a popular rest stop for migratory birds and travelling people alike. We may take a hike around the lake and spend the evening at the lake shore enjoying the sunset. Overnight, stay at ger tourist camp.

 

Day 10: “Khustai” National Park

Khustain Nuruu National Park, where herds of wild horse (Przewalski horse/Takhi) are re-acclimatizing since 1993. Takhi is the last subspecies of wild horse survived through the 21st century, first discovered in western Mongolia in late 1870s by Russian explorer named N.M. Przewalski. During your leisure hiking in the surrounding mountains, you may find wild horses, sunbathing lazy marmots, fury rabbits and deers.

Day 11: Terelj National Park

​Terelj National Park begins to the east of UB an stretches far to the north. It is home to a large buddhist temple and impressive rock formations such as the famous turtle rock. Relatively close to the capital, it is a popular weekend getaway for locals as well. Here we spend our last night in a ger camp.

​

Day 12: Tsonjin Boldog

​On our way back to UB we visit Mongolia's latest, and arguably most shiny attraction. A huge silver statue of Chingis Khan on horseback, overlooking the original homeland of his tribe to the east. The statue is accessible from the inside and allows for an amazing view from the head of his Chingis Khan's horse. Inside the base, there is a museum on Mongolian traditional clothing and the evolution of the traditional Mongolian Ger. We return to UB in the late afternoon, check in the hotel again and appreciate the comforts of civilization, though with a little longing for the wide and open space of Mongolian countryside.

Day 13: City Tour - Half day and rest of the time is for you to chill out in UB

​While Mongolia is famous for its countryside, many people overlook the treasures hidden in its capital city. Our city tour will cover the main sights, from Sukhbaatar square, National Museum and Gandan temple to the soviet era Zaisan Hill Monument. The second half of the day is free for you, to chill in UB, check out one or two coffee shops and just see Mongolian people of all ages go about their day.

Day 14: Departure day - Airport/Train Station Drop off
